BIND uses technology, including an app and augmented reality, to connect generations and highlight how youth express themselves through digital platforms.
The research phase for BIND focused on understanding the generational gap in technology use and perception. We explored how older generations engage with media and identified the best methods to highlight youth contributions. This research informed our approach to bridging the gap by blending traditional analogue methods with modern digital platforms, ensuring accessibility and relatability for both age groups.
BIND's design system uses intentional contrast between analogue and digital. Traditional media features muted, minimal visuals, while the digital experience—enhanced through augmented reality—comes to life with vibrant colors and dynamic animations. This shift symbolizes the stories of youth coming alive, showcasing how modern technology and design can create engaging, interactive experiences that bridge generational gaps. The design highlights creativity, innovation, and storytelling through seamless integration of both analogue and digital elements.
Storytelling is at the heart of BIND, focusing on real-life stories of youth making a positive impact. These narratives are communicated through both analogue mediums, like print and posters, and digital formats, including video, social media, and augmented reality. Each story is crafted to inspire and create an emotional connection, showing how technology amplifies the voices of younger generations.
The iterative process for BIND involved direct engagement with youth through visits to high schools, where I gathered valuable feedback and insights. These conversations reassured me that I was on the right path, allowing me to refine the project’s direction. Each iteration was shaped by the voices of the youth, ensuring that the design and messaging resonated with the target audience while staying true to the project’s core purpose of bridging the generational gap.
The final product is a multi-platform experience, combining analogue and digital mediums to tell the story of youth contributions in New Zealand. The BIND app serves as a hub, offering an augmented reality experience that brings these stories to life, while analogue advertising reinforces the project’s message. Together, these elements showcase the importance of technology in understanding and connecting with today’s youth.
